Stephanie Crate
I am an Elder and have done many things getting here. My interests and art are diverse.
I have lived most of my life in Vancouver's costal Northern Rain Forest. I love to draw and paint the trees here. My childhood was in the North West Territories and that snowy environment sometimes influences my art.. My style is generally impressionistic or abstract landscapes, in acrylic or pen and ink but I love a chance to do figure drawing!
From North Van High School, SFU, Europe, I went to the Vancouver School of Art (VSA) in the early 70's. VSA was in an unusual "Free School" stage so I had mixed results. I worked in a number of areas, figure drawing, painting (mostly oils at that time), design, lithography etc. but ended up in sculpture and foundry. Unfortunately, foundry was not an entirely acceptable department for women at that time.
I worked in the rebuilding of Gastown and also made and sold bead and leather crafts. During the years raising children, I was grateful for a regular Figure Drawing Class at a Community Centre.
Retirement has meant I can fit more personal art back into my life. I have been in a Plein Air sketching group for several years and worked primarily in ink and washes. I am inspired by the beauty in nature and the exceptional surroundings in Vancouver. Joining the Artists of Kerrisdale has enabled me to regularly paint again.
I also support public Art programs.
