Tips, Tricks & Techniques


​Simple ideas for seeing your painting in different ways to access tone, composition and
everything in between; in other words trying to see the big picture

 
Here are a few tips:

-  Step away from your painting;  a long way -- as far as you can

-  Small room - try using binoculars from the opposite end

-  Look at it in a mirror

-  Squint and look at it

-  Squint and work on it

​-  Use clear red cellophane and hold over your painting to determine tonal value

​-  If you are using a colour photo - try copying it into black & white
​
​-  Turn the painting upside down
